The curriculum emphasises skills in reading comprehension, writing for a variety of purposes and audiences, speaking, listening, and viewing. Additionally, students are encouraged to engage with texts that reflect their experiences and cultures, fostering empathy and cultural awareness. The varied learning experiences also focus on building vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking skills to prepare students for the increasing challenges of Stage 5 English and beyond.

English builds on the foundations laid in Stage 4 by inviting students to interact with increasingly sophisticated and diverse texts, ranging from classical literature to contemporary multimedia formats. Students refine their skills in analysing language features, text structures, purpose, and context to develop well-informed, critical, and creative responses. Writing skills are further advanced, with students experimenting with different styles and genres to suit various audiences and purposes. Oral communication and listening skills are strengthened through presentations and discussions, fostering confidence and clarity. This stage encourages students to think independently and critically about complex social, cultural, and ethical issues, supporting their preparation for the rigours of Stage 6 English courses and equipping them with lifelong communication skills essential for further education, employment, and active citizenship.

English Standard
The English Standard course offers students a comprehensive study of a broad range of texts drawn from contemporary and historical contexts, spanning imaginative, informative, and persuasive modes. It emphasises the development of students’ analytical skills to interpret complex ideas, language features, and cultural contexts, while encouraging creativity and originality in their own compositions. Students engage with themes that resonate personally, socially, and globally, learning to communicate effectively for a range of purposes and audiences. The course nurtures critical thinking, close reading, and articulate expression, equipping students with robust literacy skills essential for success in further education, the workforce, and meaningful participation in a diverse society.

English Advanced

English Advanced provides a rigorous and intellectually stimulating engagement with a diverse array of literary and non-literary texts. Students explore complex themes, cultural perspectives, and sophisticated language techniques in order to develop deep critical understanding and creative expression. The course challenges students to appreciate the power of language in shaping identity, community, values and beliefs. Through detailed textual study, analytical writing, and imaginative composition, students refine their ability to communicate nuanced ideas with clarity and precision. English Advanced is designed for students with a strong interest in literature and language who plan to pursue tertiary education or careers requiring advanced literacy, critical thinking, and communication expertise.

English Studies

English Studies caters to students seeking to enhance practical literacy and communication competencies in real-world contexts, including work, community, and further education settings. This course focuses on developing confidence and skills in comprehending, composing, and responding to a wide range of text types such as workplace documents, informational texts, and multimedia resources. Students improve functional reading, writing, speaking, listening, and digital literacy skills necessary for employment and vocational training. The course adopts a supportive and inclusive approach to meet diverse learning needs, emphasising the application of literacy in everyday life, promoting personal empowerment, independence, and lifelong learning.

English Extension 1

English Extension 1 invites students to engage in an in-depth, sophisticated exploration of texts and textual concepts beyond the Stage 6 Advanced English curriculum. The course fosters advanced critical thinking and creativity through detailed analysis of language, form, and cultural contexts, alongside the development of personal, imaginative, and reflective writing. Students produce richly developed creative texts and critical essays, applying nuanced interpretations and sophisticated language use to explore and evaluate the ways texts construct meaning. This course is an ideal choice for students who seek to extend their analytical and expressive abilities, preparing them for higher-level academic challenges and cultivating a deep appreciation of the complexities of English language and literature.

English Extension 2

English Extension 2 is an intensive, independent study course centred on the creation of a Major Work, either creative or critical, allowing students to develop original, extended compositions that reflect personal interest and expertise. Accompanying critical reflections provide insight into the creative or analytical process, demonstrating the student’s capacity for self-directed learning, originality, and advanced literary skills. This course is designed for highly motivated and talented students who demonstrate exceptional aptitude in English and wish to pursue an ambitious, rigorous literary project. It provides invaluable experience for students seeking to excel in university-level literary study or careers involving creativity, research, and critical inquiry.
