Mathematics
In Stage 4 Mathematics, students develop foundational numeracy and problem-solving skills essential for understanding mathematical concepts and applying them to real-world situations. They engage with a broad range of topics including number operations, patterns and algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics, and probability. The curriculum fosters logical reasoning, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate mathematical ideas effectively. Students learn to use technology and mathematical tools to support their learning and develop confidence working with data and abstract concepts. Course description Stage 5 - Years 9 and 10

Mathematics offers students a choice of courses that cater to different interests and academic pathways, reinforcing and expanding their mathematical knowledge and skills. Students explore more advanced concepts in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and probability, applying these to problem-solving and real-life contexts. The curriculum encourages the development of analytical thinking, logical reasoning, and effective use of technology such as graphing calculators and software. Through investigative and collaborative learning, students refine their ability to interpret complex information and communicate solutions clearly. Stage 5 prepares students for diverse Stage 6 courses tailored to their future educational and vocational goals.

Mathematics 5.1

Mathematics 5.1 is designed for students interested in practical applications of mathematics in everyday life, further education, and the workforce. This course reinforces foundational concepts with a focus on financial mathematics, measurement, statistics, and data interpretation, promoting functional numeracy skills. It prepares students for Mathematics Standard in Stage 6 and supports a variety of post-school pathways through practical problem-solving activities and real-world applications.

Mathematics 5.2

Mathematics 5.2 offers a balanced approach to mathematical topics, providing students with a solid foundation in algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics, and probability. This course develops students’ reasoning and problem-solving abilities and introduces more abstract mathematical ideas in preparation for Mathematics Advanced or Standard courses in Stage 6. It emphasises developing a deep understanding of mathematical principles alongside practical applications.

Mathematics 5.3

Mathematics 5.3 provides an accelerated and challenging curriculum intended for students with strong mathematical abilities and aspirations to study Mathematics MathematicAdvanced or Extension courses in Stage 6. It covers complex topics in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus foundations, and statistical analysis. The course promotes high-level problem-solving skills, analytical thinking, and mathematical rigour to prepare students for the demands of tertiary study and STEM-related careers

Mathematics Advanced

Mathematics Advanced provides a comprehensive study of mathematical concepts including algebra, functions, calculus, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics. This course develops a deep understanding of mathematical theory and enhances skills in problem-solving, abstract reasoning, and logical thinking. Students engage in rigorous analytical work as well as practical applications, often utilising technology for complex calculations and graphical analysis. Mathematics Advanced is suitable for students aiming for tertiary education in fields requiring strong mathematical competence such as engineering, science, and mathematics itself.

Mathematics Extension 1

Mathematics Extension 1 challenges students with an in-depth exploration of advanced topics like calculus, proof, and complex algebraic concepts. The course fosters high-level problem-solving abilities, mathematical rigour, and abstract thinking. Students develop skills in constructing formal mathematical arguments and modelling complex situations. Mathematics Extension 2

Mathematics Extension 2 is a highly specialised and demanding course designed for students with outstanding mathematical ability. Mathematics Standard

The Mathematics Standard course is designed for students who seek to develop practical mathematical skills for use in everyday life, further education, and the workforce. The course emphasises problem-solving, reasoning, and the use of technology to analyse and interpret data. Mathematics Standard supports diverse career pathways and equips students with the numeracy skills essential for active participation in modern society.

Numeracy

The Numeracy course is tailored for students aiming to strengthen fundamental numeracy skills crucial for personal, social, and work contexts. It focuses on practical mathematical understanding, covering topics such as everyday calculations, measurement, budgeting, data interpretation, and problem-solving.
