Biology

Biology focuses on the study of living organisms, their structure, function, growth, evolution, and interactions with ecosystems. Students examine cellular biology, genetics, physiology, biodiversity, and ecological relationships through investigation and inquiry-based learning. The course integrates scientific concepts with current issues like conservation, health, and biotechnology, highlighting the significance of biology in society. Biology develops students’ skills in research, data analysis, and evidence-based reasoning, providing a strong foundation for further education or careers in health sciences, environmental management, and biotechnology.

Chemistry

Chemistry in Stage 6 explores the structure and properties of matter, chemical reactions, atomic theory, bonding, energetics, and the chemical basis of biological systems. Students conduct detailed laboratory investigations, learning to analyse and interpret data critically. The course promotes understanding of the role of chemistry in technology, industry, health, and the environment, encouraging consideration of ethical, social, and sustainability issues. Chemistry prepares students for further study in science, health, engineering, and environmental disciplines by developing precise analytical skills and scientific literacy.

Earth and Environmental Science

Earth and Environmental Science explores the Earth’s systems, geology, atmospheric processes, ecosystems, and human impacts on the environment. The course encourages students to investigate and understand natural phenomena and environmental challenges using scientific methods and critical analysis. Emphasis is placed on sustainability, resource management, and the interaction between human activities and the Earth’s environment. This subject develops scientific literacy and empowers students to contribute thoughtfully to addressing environmental issues at local and global levels, serving as excellent preparation for related tertiary studies and careers.

Investigating Science

Investigating Science focuses on the development of scientific inquiry skills through hands-on, student-led investigations. Students plan, conduct, and evaluate experiments to answer research questions across various scientific disciplines, enhancing their understanding of the processes and methodologies of science. The course promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, encouraging students to engage with real-world scientific challenges and to appreciate the role of evidence-based reasoning. Investigating Science is ideal for students who enjoy practical science and wish to deepen their investigative skills.

Physics

The Physics course provides a comprehensive study of fundamental physics concepts including motion, forces, energy, waves, electricity, and electromagnetism. Students develop skills in mathematical modelling, experimental investigation, and critical analysis of data and scientific theories. The course emphasises the application of physics to solve practical problems and understand natural phenomena, fostering deep conceptual understanding alongside inquiry and communication skills. Physics is ideal for students interested in pursuing tertiary education and careers in science, engineering, technology, and related fields requiring strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

Science Extension (Year 12 only)

Science Extension is an advanced course for highly motivated students seeking to extend their scientific understanding and inquiry skills beyond the core Stage 6 Science subjects. It emphasises independent research, complex problem-solving, and exploration of advanced scientific concepts and applications. Students develop sophisticated experimental and communication skills through challenging projects that require creativity, critical thinking, and scientific rigour. Science Extension prepares students for tertiary studies in science, technology, and research-intensive fields, fostering a deep appreciation of the nature of scientific investigation and discovery.
