We are incredibly proud of Sophie Harrison, who has just returned from her Gold Residential Project as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. Her 8-day experience in Momi Bay, Fiji, was one of service, leadership, growth and deep cultural connection—and we’ve just received glowing feedback from her trip leader that captures exactly how special Sophie’s journey was.
"Sophie truly encapsulated all the qualities the Duke of Ed Residential Project could hope to grow and showcase in a student. Her leadership abilities surpassed any I have seen across my many years as an educator."
Sophie worked on a range of community-based projects, including concreting footpaths, beach clean-ups, farm work, and assisting at a women’s shelter. She helped run a kids’ club, cooked for the community, and led her team with confidence, compassion, and humour.
"She consistently looked out for those around her and built connection and positivity with every interaction—be it with peers, staff, women at the shelter, or kids at the village. Sophie led by example, was considerate, hardworking, and used her spirit and humour to unite the group together."
From navigating Sydney Airport on her own, to stepping outside her comfort zone every day, Sophie challenged herself to grow—and did so with strength and purpose. She embraced the cultural exchange through Fijian lessons, yoga, traditional dance and meaningful conversations with locals. Her reflections on the generosity of the Fijian people highlighted the life lessons she took away:
“The kindness and generosity I experienced from the Fijian people has left a lasting impact on me. It truly made me appreciate the opportunities and comforts we often take for granted.”
Even more inspiring was Sophie’s quiet strength. She used every opportunity on this trip to grow and support others. Her trip leader summed it up best:
“Sophie was hardworking, perceptive, and a true inspiration to all she crossed paths with. A genuine powerhouse in all aspects.”
We couldn’t agree more.
Sophie, you’ve represented Engadine High School with integrity, courage and empathy. You’ve lived out the values of the Duke of Ed Gold Award, and we can't wait to see where your next adventure takes you.
